Birds of Paradox at the Cowdome

Arkville — Jeff Slate’s Birds of Paradox ( have announced a debut album and a Northeast tour slated for fall, but first, a lucky audience will be treated to a very special summer show on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cowdome in Arkville.

Birds of Paradox’s roster reads like a veritable Who’s Who of bands, with its debut album including members of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Elephant’s Memory Band, Paul McCartney and Wings, The Who, The Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, ELO, The Temptations and Procol Harum.

The band features frontman Slate (The Badge, Pete Townshend), guitarist Jimmy McElligott (Gene Cornish, Tommy James), bassist Gary Van Scyoc (John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Elephant’s Memory Band, Chuck Berry), keyboardist Adam Ippolito (John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Elephant’s Memory Band, Kool and the Gang) and drummer Alex Alexander (Prince, Willie Nile). The band takes its name from a John Lennon song, “Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox).”

Along with tracks from its album due this fall, Birds of Paradox will play some of the classic hits from the aforementioned bands with whom the members have performed.
“We’re really excited to play the Cowdome; it’s a great space with fantastic history, and we can’t wait to meet our upstate fans after the show,” added Slate.

The Arkville Cowdome was built in the 1920s and has served as a community center, roller skating rink, dance hall and home to part-time resident Milton Berle’s “Monster Ball,” an annual fundraiser that featured performers such as Gypsy Rose Lee and Henny Youngman. The Cowdome is on Facebook at
