Betty Stahl Veit, 85, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2009. She was born Feb. 15, 1924 in Margaretville, the daughter of Leslie and Ellen Stahl. She graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1940.
Betty attended Vassar Nursing School in Kingston before she and Bob Veit were married on August 21, 1944.
They raised their family in Margaretville and purchased a bowling alley, Evergreen Lanes, in 1960 which they operated until they retired in 1987 in Holiday, Florida. Betty’s love of golf and bowling continued until she moved to Arlington, Texas in 2004 where she bowled until May 2009, which was the 61st year Betty had been an active member of the WIBC. In addition to her love of bowling and golf Betty and her late sister, Winona Kutz, were avid collectors of Depression glassware for over 30 years.
Surviving are her daughter, Jan Bellair and her husband, George of Arlington, Texas; her brother, Ellsworth “Bill” Stahl and wife, Doris of Margaretville; nieces, Carol Coburn of Colorado and Jeannie Cushman of Virginia. Also surviving are nephews, Jerry Stahl of Kingston and Bobby Stahl of Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Veit in 1998 and a son, Jon Veit.
