Baseball is back in Shandaken

To The Editor:
This past Saturday, Glenbrook Park in the Town of Shandaken was the site for something that had not happened in the town for more than a decade – an Opening Day celebration for the onset of Little League baseball.
The drizzly weather and the below average temperatures did not deter the 300 or so players, friends, and family members who gathered at the recently-improved park. During the week leading up to the big day, community volunteers and Mountain Valley Little League committee members worked hard to get the facility ready. Additionally, the Town of Shandaken really stepped up to the plate for the benefit of the kids, primarily Supervisor Rob Stanley, Highway Supervisor Eric Hofmeister and his crew, and Sandy Stanley, town Parks and Recreation advocate for Glenbrook Park. Without the town’s support, this event, and the forthcoming season, would not have been possible.
In addition to the wonderful food, kids’ games, and other family-friendly fun, a homerun derby was also held in each of the four Little League divisions (T-ball, Minors, Majors, and Challenger). The “first pitch” which kicks off the season, was a down-home “Shandaken slider”, tossed by Supervisor Stanley.
Other organizations, agencies, people, and businesses that helped bring baseball back to Shandaken include the Ulster Savings Bank, Shandaken Councilman Tim Malloy, the Ulster County Sheriff, Shandaken Ambulance, Shandaken Fire Company, Phoenicia Library, Phoenicia Rotary, Pine Hill Community Center, Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program, Peekamoose Restaurant, Brio’s Restaurant, The Emerson, and Kohl’s.
Over the past several seasons, facility issues at the field, coupled with a lack of players from the local area had put a damper on Little League here in the heart of the Catskills.  League President David Alterio said, “Those challenges have been surmounted, and the Mountain Valley Little League, comprised of kids and families from the towns of Shandaken, Olive, Woodstock, and Hurley – is poised to keep baseball in Shandaken for many years to come.”
