Barn survey planned for summer
Margaretville — The Historical Society of the Town of Middletown will conduct a photographic survey of barns this summer. Armed with digital cameras and data forms, teams of volunteers will fan out across the town, which covers 98 square miles.
They will explore all state, county and town roads looking for barns that are at least 50 years old, recording the location, condition, history and other information about the structures. Related farm buildings, such as chicken coops, silos and sap houses, will be noted.
Volunteers are needed to cover the Fleischmanns-Red Kill-Highmount area of Middletown. For information or to volunteer, contact HSM President Diane Galusha, 586-4973.
The project is part of the Historical Society’s ongoing effort to document the town’s agricultural history. “Every year, a few more barns are lost to neglect and the elements, so recording them for posterity is important, before they are all gone,” explained Galusha.
