Auxiliary Wellness Committee to help run ice rink

The ice skating rink in the Village of Margaretville will be open this winter, after an absence of two years.

Members of the Wellness Committee of the Auxiliary of Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center met with Mayor Bill Stanton on November 28 and agreed to oversee operation of the rink this year.

Wellness Committee Chair John Riedl said his group has set up a subcommittee of members who will work to set up the rink and maintain the recreational facility throughout the season.

The village has previously offered financial and manpower support for operation of the public rink, which is located in the park adjacent to the pavilion. For many years, Margaretville residents Mike and Becky Porter led volunteer efforts to set up the rink and keep the ice in good shape for skating with timely snow removal and other duties. When the Porters stepped down from leading efforts to keep the rink operational, a void was created.

Mayor Stanton said the village does not have adequate finances and manpower to maintain the rink and he welcomed the Wellness Committee’s involvement.

Fund-raising tops on the list for the Wellness Committee, Mr. Riedl said. A new rink liner is almost $2,000, including shipping.

Members of the ice skating subcommittee include Mr. Riedl, Carol Molnar, George and Rita Herbst and Terry Cohen.

Anyone who would like to make a financial contribution to the skating rink project, or to sign up as a volunteer, is invited to contact Carol Molnar at 845 586-3933.

Mr. Riedl explained that the skating rink provides the type of activitiy that fits perfectly with the Wellness Committee’s mission to “develop and support programs that enhance the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being of our community.”
