Area schools name top grads

Area schools have announced their top honor graduates from the Class of 2010.

Andes Central School

Kaitlin Mackay, valedictorian
Kaitlin Mackay is the daughter of Edward and Susan Mackay of Andes.
During the course of her high school career, Mackay has been an active participant on the varsity basketball and varsity soccer teams and a member of the chorus. Highlighting her academic achievements, Mackay is a member of the National Honor Society and the Business Honor Society in addition to participating in extracurricular activities such as the Outdoor Club and SADD.
Mackay plans to attend Hofstra University, where she will major in accounting.

Karli Tait, salutatorian
Karli Tait is the daughter of Dale and Judi Tait of Andes.
Over the course of her high school years, Tait has been a member of the varsity soccer, basketball and softball teams and has participated in the band and chorus programs. Tait’s academic achievements have been complemented by her extracurricular activities; she is a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Business Honor Society and Science Club, in addition to the Outdoor Club and SADD.
Tait plans to attend SUNY Oswego and major in elementary education.

Margaretville Central School

Garrett James Fairbairn, valedictorian
Garrett James Fairbairn is the son of Victor and Susan Fairbairn of Margaretville.
A Principal’s List honoree and the recipient of the Scholar Recognition Award from the ONC BOCES district, he has held the position of president in both the National Honor Society and the MCS Senate. Fairbairn has been a member of the varsity baseball team, chorus, the drama club (known as the Scitamard Society) and has volunteered in his local community with such ventures as the Christmas Community Project, American Cancer Society, CROP walk for hunger and the Margaretville Methodist Church Youth Group.
At MCS, Fairbairn secured nine credit hours of college coursework through SUNY Delhi and will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma. He has been accepted to Binghamton University, where he will major in psychology. Upon completing his undergraduate degree, he plans to pursue a doctorate in psychology with a concentration in biology and hopes to work in the field of neuropsychology.

Michelle Erin O’Reilly, salutatorian
Michelle Erin O’Reilly is the daughter of John and Wendy O’Reilly of Arkville.
In addition to her academic achievements, O’Reilly has been an active member of Margaretville Central School’s athletic teams. She has participated in varsity soccer for four years, varsity basketball for three years, varsity tennis for four years, and varsity golf for one year. She has also been a member of National Honor Society and drama club, and has served as treasurer for her class and of the drama club.
After graduating this year, Michelle plans to attend SUNY Plattsburgh. She has been accepted into the Adolescence Mathematics Education (BA/MST) Program for the fall of 2010. Michelle has also been invited to participate in the SUNY Plattsburgh honors program.

Roxbury Central School

Rachel Lynn Meckes, valedictorian
Rachel Lynn Meckes is the daughter of David and Carol Meckes of Roxbury.
The recipient of the Bausch and Lomb Award, the New York Academic Excellence Scholarship and the Scholar Recognition Award, she has served as president of the Honor Society and president of the Science Olympiad Team. Meckes has participated in each drama production since she was a sophomore and has participated as a member of the varsity soccer, varsity basketball and varsity softball teams.
Meckes has been a Scholar Athlete each season and was also selected as one of the Delaware County Scholar Athletes. In addition, she has been a member of the chorus and has received numerous NYSSMA awards.
Meckes plans to attend Elmira College this fall, where she will major in biochemistry.

Alexa Leann Finch, salutatorian
Alexa Leann Finch is the daughter of Will and Sherry Finch of Roxbury. A member of the National Honor Society and Science Olympiad, Finch has performed in drama productions for the past six years. She has attended leadership conferences and was selected to go to the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership development organization as a sophomore. In addition, Finch was chosen to sing in the All County Jazz Choir, is an active member of the Community Chorale, and has received numerous NYSSMA awards. She also played for the Margaretville Central School pit band.
Finch will attend SUNY Delhi in the fall and will major in elementary education.
