Area Police News: July 7, 2010
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a motorcycle accident Thursday afternoon on Route 28 near the intersection of Canada Hollow in the Town of Middletown west of Dunraven.
Deputies say the driver was Aras Toraman, 24, of Fairview, N.J. His passenger was Michele Hernandez, 26, of Ridgefield, N.J.
The motorcycle was traveling west on Route 28 in a section of roadway that has a lot of corners. Toraman failed to negotiate a turn in the road and lost control. The motorcycle left the roadway and struck the guardrail in the opposite lane. The motorcycle then went back into the roadway and came to a rest in the middle of the road.
The driver and passenger were found to be wearing novelty helmets that are not DOT certified.
Both subjects were transported to Margaretville Hospital then airlifted from Arkville to Albany Medical Hospital. No tickets have been given at this time.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies searched properties located in the towns of Delhi and Davenport on July 1 and seized 69 marijuana plants.
Acting on information provided by the Civil Air Patrol, deputies searched a property located between the West Branch of the Delaware River and Arbor Hill Road in the Town of Delhi on Thursday morning and seized 35 marijuana plants. That afternoon, deputies searched along the Charlotte Creek in Davenport Center and seized 34 additional plants.
Deputies are continuing their investigation and encourage anyone with information concerning the cultivation of marijuana to contact and report suspected growing locations to the sheriff’s office. Calls will remain confidential and callers can report information anonymously.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies are currently investigating the larceny of a canoe taken sometime over Memorial weekend. The canoe was taken from a camp located on the Back River Road along the West Branch of the Delaware River between Delhi and the Town of Hamden. The canoe is described as a faded red Coleman canoe. Shandaken Police report the arrest Monday of Joseph P. Vanleuvan, 22, of Fleischmanns. Police say they received a complaint that Vanleuvan made threats and grabbed a 21-year-old woman by the arm and stole her pocketbook in Big Indian.
Vanleuvan was charged with petit larceny, endangering the welfare of a minor and harassment. He was issued appearance tickets returnable in Town of Shandaken Justice Court.
