Andes community rallies to aid injured ACS teacher

Kerry McCracken, an Andes Central School teacher, was in a bad automobile accident in November. As a result of the injuries sustained, her right leg had to be amputated. In the months following her accident, Kerry has undergone a tremendous amount of therapy, both physical and mental. After seven weeks of being in intensive care and undergoing an intense physical therapy regiment at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, she returned home to South Kortright to her husband Jim and three small children, Logan, age seven, Aileen, age five and Delan, age three.
Kerry’s physical recuperation to date has been as successful as possible, but she continues to deal with the life-altering effects of her accident. Among these changes are required home modifications such as the need to accommodate wheelchair accessibility, gain access to the second floor and provide functionality her bathroom.
During Kerry’s eight years with ACS, where she has served as both a third-grade teacher and an Academic In School (AIS) teacher, she has given 110 percent of herself. It is now our turn to give back.
The ACS Parent Teacher Student Association has teamed up with ACS faculty, staff and students and together will host various fund-raising events throughout the remainder of the school year to raise funds to assist Kerry and her family. Last month’s fund-raiser was a ‘many pennies’ contest and over $1,000 was raised. In April it will be a lunch at the Andel Inn and thanks to the generosity of the new owner, Vijay Nahata, who donated the use of the banquet hall and the food, 100 percent of the funds raised will go to Kerry’s cause. In May we plan to have a community garage sale.
Together we can join forces and make a difference in the life of a treasured teacher and community member who has already made a difference in our lives. All donations welcome.
