Andes boys advance in sectional tournament; Roxbury boys, Andes and Margaretville girls fall
After nearly a week of delays due to a late winter snow storm measuring up to four feet in some locations, area basketball teams finally got back on the court over the weekend as the Section IV Class D tournament got underway.
The Andes boys posted a 52-40 win over the host Wildcats of Gilboa to advance to the quarterfinal round. Eric Reed tallied 30 points for the Mountaineers, who scored first and never trailed. Andes will face the host Wildcats of Cherry Valley-Springfield at 6 p.m. tonight.
The season came to an end for the Roxbury boys on Saturday, when they dropped a tough 59-36 quarterfinal to the host Rams of South Kortright. Kyle Ciaravino led the Rocketh with nine points and senior DaVaun Morgan added seven. The Rockets finish the season 12-7.
The season came to an end on Saturday for the Andes Mountaineers, who entered the sectional tournament seeded 12th to face the second-seeded Wildcats of Davenport. Senior Rachel Andrews led Andes with eight points and Mariah Ruff added six for the Mountaineers, who finish the season 8-10.
The Margaretville girls also saw their sectional run come to a close as they suffered a 38-26 defeat at the hands of the Jefferson JayHawks on Saturday afternoon. Senior Erica Faulkner led the Blue Devils with 13 points and Olivia Todd added six.
