The German-American Club of the Northern Catskills will hold its 10th Annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Belleayre Mountain Ski Center’s Discovery Lodge.
Music by the Schwarzenegger Connection and Bavarian folk dancers will set the tone at the event, which will feature vendors selling a variety of German crafts, including wood carvings, amber jewelry, beer steins, and clothing. German refreshments, including imported German beer, homemade cakes, German specialty cakes, bratwurst, soups, and other German classics will also be available.
Money raised from ticket sales will go to assist a number of worthy causes.
“We have all kinds of charities that we support,” said Marion Hohn, president of the German-American Club of the Northern Catskills. “Margaretville Hospital, all the local fire departments and emergency medical services, an Alzheimer’s group, cancer research, Catskill Hospice, the animal shelter, and then we have two scholarships of $500 each for graduating high school seniors.”
Funds are also donated to Fisher House in Albany, a home-away-from-home for members of hospitalized veterans or veterans visiting a hospitalized family member.
“We try to do different things each year,” Hohn said. “And if we get any other requests, we try to meet those, too. We are a social and philanthropic group.”
The event, now in its 10th year, usually brings in as many as 1,000 people, particularly on good-weather fall days.
“I would say it’s kind of taken on a life of its own,” Hohn said. “People bring friends, and friends bring friends… it seems to capture everybody’s imagination. People bring children and grandchildren. It’s a fun thing to get together and celebrate our heritage with food and drink.”
The event will also feature raffle prizes and door prizes. The grand door prize will be a $100 gift certificate to the Phoenix Restaurant at the Emerson Resort and Spa in Mt. Tremper.
Tickets to the 10th Annual Oktoberfest may be purchased for $8 at the door or $6 in advance; for more information or to buy tickets, contact Marion Hohn at 586-2246.
