RCS girls fall to Afton in Sectionals nail-biter

By John Bernhardt
Experience counts in Section IV postseason play. That’s the final basketball lesson of the 2014 season for a young, emerging Roxbury girls’ basketball team. The Rockets showed their inexperience while dropping a nail biting, 28-25, Class D opening round decision to Afton last week.

Hot shooting by SCS too much for Blue Devils

By John Bernhardt
Matt Anderson was feeling it. The Stamford shooting guard was on fire last week, hitting almost every shot he launched in the Indians’ opening round Section IV, Class D, victory over Margaretville.
Anderson blistered the nets with seven three-point goals, four in the second quarter, scoring a game-high 27 points as Stamford advanced with a 65-45 win.

Season of strong growth puts RCS girls in the sectionals

By John Bernhardt
As Lisa Faraci sees it, there is no magic behind the meteoric rise of the Roxbury girls’ basketball team this season. For Faraci the improvement of her Rockets is all about education. Her Rocket squad is young and eager, shows a ton of heart of the floor, and is resilient and eager to learn.
“The girls love the game and are listening, learning and working on the things we’ve been talking about every day,” explained Faraci.

MCS Senior Sam Capriotti pulls no punches with passion for boxing

By John Bernhardt
Someone once said, “Boxing isn’t for the feint of heart, it’s for the full of heart.” That’s an apt description of Sam Caprotti, 17, a senior at Margaretville Central School.
Sam Caprotti loves to box. Boxing is a form of self-discovery for Caprotti. A sport often called ‘the sweet science’ helps Caprotti discover something deep inside himself, a desire or a need, that allows Sam to continually surprise himself by exceeding what he once believed were his own limitations.

No. 1 Davenport holds off Blue Devils in hard fought hoop contest

By John Bernhardt
Why stop now? Last Thursday, the Margaretville Blue Devils boys’ basketball team continued its pattern of madcap hardwood adventures through the last regular season contest of the year. The Blue Devils failed to convert the winning field goal in three attempts during the final 10 seconds of the fourth quarter, then fell, 49-45, in overtime to first place Davenport.

Roxbury girls are on a roll with 3 wins leading into Sectionals

By John Bernhardt
The Roxbury Rockets girls’ basketball team will enter Section IV post-season play as one of the hottest basketball teams in the Class D bracket.
Roxbury finished the regular season on a roll, winning their final three games including a 55-45 victory over the Delaware League’s Upper Division champion Davenport. Wins over Andes and Downsville later in the week boosted Roxbury’s DL record to 12-3. The Rockets finished the regular season at 12-5 overall.
