Barbara Smithers

Barbara Smithers, 83, a longtime resident of Shandaken, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Skaneateles. She was a longtime member of the Shandaken Memorial United Methodist Church where she was active with the United Methodist Women’s Group. For many years she and her husband Smitty owned and operated Mount Pleasant Farms Dairy, one of the last door-to-door milk delivery businesses in the Town of Shandaken.

Herman Quick

Herman Alton Quick, 79, of Leggs Mill Road, Lake Katrine, died Friday, Feb 19, 2010 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born May 10, 1930 in Liebhart. He resided in Allaben and Chichester for most of his life before moving to Lake Katrine in 2001.
Herman served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, having spent most of that time in both Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska.

Muriel Robinson

Muriel Scott Robinson, 69, of Margaretville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010. She was born on Aug. 11, 1940 and grew up in the Catskill Mountain region of Upstate New York.
Muriel received her B.S. in business from the University at Albany in Albany, and was for many years Chief Financial Officer of the Audubon Naturalist Society of the Mid-Atlantic States in Chevy Chase, Md.

Claire Balcom

Claire Jeanne Kenna Balcom, 81, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010. She was born July 31, 1928 to James and Clara Kenna of Brooklyn. Claire was a graduate of St. Teresa of Avila Elementary, Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School and the Long Island College Hospital of Nursing.
She married Francis G. Balcom after World War II.

Lucy Benjamin

Lucy Benjamin, 97, of Academy Street, Pine Hill died Thursday evening, Feb.11, 2010 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville with her family in attendance.  

She was a lifetime Catskill Mountains resident, having made her home in Pine Hill since the 1950s.  

Chi Tan Liu

Retired chemist and businesswoman Chi Tan Liu died on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville, surrounded by the love of her family and nursing-home staffers. She was 92 years old.

A Mountainside resident since February 2004, she leaves behind her daughters, Pauline and Betty, her granddaughters, Alana and Gabrielle, and her son-in-law, Joe Moskowitz.

Paulette Mattice

Paulette Ann Mattice, 58, of Gilboa, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at her residence. She was born July 7, 1951 in Margaretville, the daughter of Elwood and Ruth (Miller) Clark. She was the loving wife of Arthur Mattice, whom she married Dec. 14, 1969 in Gilboa.

Anne Moldovan

Anne Moldovan, a longtime resident of Bragg Hollow, Halcottsville, passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, after a long illness. She had lived with her sister the past several years in Loudonville. She died in Hospice Care at the Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Watervliet, N.Y.

Alan Galowitz

Alan Galowitz, 80, of Andes died peacefully at home on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010. He was born Oct. 23, 1929 in Brooklyn, the son of Ida and Morris Galowitz, the brother of Ruth Block and Lila Rockstein. He was the devoted husband of Phyllis, loving father of Lori Ortiz, Jeannie (Pablo Delano), Amy (John Heney) and Cara Galowitz and the loving grandfather of David and Emily Delano and Ian Heney.

Paul Brinley

Paul M. Brinley, 47, of Andes, N.Y., and Galveston, Texas. died suddenly on Monday, Jan. 18 2010 of a massive cerebral aneurysm. A member of the Andes Central School class of 1980, he graduated with high honors from Colgate University in 1984, majoring in finance and economics. He was then employed by national financial and insurance firms as a Directors and Officers specialist, winning many awards for his success in that field.
