Charles Schafer

Charles Van Kirk Schafer, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008. He was cared for at home by his loving family and with the help of the Catskill Area Hospice.
He was born in Fairfield, N.J. on May 2, 1925. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry during WWII in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star and was a member of the American Legion.


Alice Kasmer

Alice Elizabeth (Reed) Kasmer, 85, of Roxbury, passed away in her home where she lived her entire life, on Monday morning, Oct. 13. She was born in Roxbury on September 21, 1923, the daughter of Burton and Elizabeth (Webb) Reed. She graduated from Roxbury Central School in 1941. She then attended Wilfred Beauty Academy in New York City. After receiving her cosmetology license, she opened her own hair salon in Roxbury.


Katherine Blackburn

Katherine Blackburn, 91, of Andes, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville. She was born in Brooklyn on February 5, 1917, the daughter of Joseph and Kit Giblin. She married James Brutis Blackburn. Katherine was a loving mother and a very caring person giving beyond the call of duty. She had been an area resident for the past two years.


Arthur Smith

Arthur Nelson Smith, 73, passed away at home on Friday evening, Oct. 3, 2008.
He was born on December 20, 1934 in Margaretville. He graduated from St. Lawrence in Canton where he was a member of the ROTC. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany as a military policeman. He then joined the Army Reserves and became a long-standing member of the Army Pistol and Rifle teams until he retired as a Major in 1994.


Marilyn Ford

Marilyn Ruth Ford, 80, of Mt. Tremper, died on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008. Marilyn passed away gracefully and peacefully from her sleep while in the loving embrace of her family. Her tenacious love of life could not overcome the power of lung cancer. She lived life to the fullest during her 80 years.


Raymond Stone, MD

Family physician Raymond L. Stone, MD, 87, a charter member of the American Academy of Family Practice, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Stone, of Elizabeth, N.J., practiced medicine since 1950 and was active in state and national medical societies for over 50 years; including Union County and New Jersey Medical Societies and the American Medical Association.


Robert Reed

Robert S. Reed. 59, of Catskill, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 at Albany Medical Center where he had been a patient for the past three weeks. He was born in Margaretville on December 12, 1948 to the late Stanley and Virginia Liddle Reed. Bob graduated from Andes Central School, class of 1967, earned his bachelor’s degree from Northeast Missouri State and master’s degree from Russell Sage.
He married the former Susan Shaver on September 10, 1969.


Hector Sprague

Hector Sprague, 62, of Margaretville, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008. He was born on June 13, 1946, the son of the late Mary and John Sprague. He was a loving father to Ann Marie Salazar and husband Brian of Albuquerque, N.M., and Edward Sprague and wife, Melissa, also of Albuquerque, N.M.


Henrietta Farber

Henrietta K. Farber, 84, of Wellington, Fla., and Margaretville, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 at Benedictine Hospital, Kingston. She was born March 26, 1924 in Manhattan, the daughter of Max and Sadie (Ginder) Kass. She married Al Farber on December 12, 1948 at Kass Inn, Margaretville.


Bertha Cammer

Bertha Cammer, 94, of Roxbury, passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville. She was born July 27, 1914, the daughter of Orley and Effie (Morse) Slauson. She married Lynn Cammer on June 1, 1933, in Roxbury.
Bertha was a cook at Kirkside Adult Home in Roxbury and a seamstress.
