Leah Kirstein

Leah Kirstein, 87, passed away at Mountainside on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009.
She was born in Brooklyn, the daughter of a tailor. Leah pursued fashion design as a young woman and worked in New York’s garment district.


Ellen Scheer

Ellen Ash Scheer, 90, of Roxbury, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, just two days before her 91st birthday. She was born in Cordell, Okla., the daughter of A.R. Ash, a lawyer and Gertrude Harlow Ash, a teacher of piano.


Anne McGrath

Anne P. McGrath, of Old Bridge, N.J., formerly of Esopus Road, Phoenicia, died on Wednesday, June 4, 2008. Surviving are her sons, Brian, and his wife, Georgie, of Spring Lake, NJ and Daniel McGrath, a brother Frank McLean and a sister Patricia O’Connor. Six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.


Hazel Acampa

Hazel Acampa, 86, of Woodlands, Texas, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009 at her son’s home in Texas where she had made her home.
She was born Oct. 15, 1922 in Montreal, the daughter of the late Stephen and Louise Canadian Delisle.
She and her late husband Frank owned and operated a milk-fed veal farm in Bovina Center from 1978 through 1987.


Mabelle Russell

Mabelle P. Russell, nee Frances M. Taber, 88, of New Kingston, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009.
She was born in Fulton on May 3, 1920, the daughter of W. Burton and Isabel Warren Taber.
Mabelle had worked in several secretarial and accountant positions over her lifetime, retiring from SUNY Delhi.


Donald Ballard

Donald G. Ballard, 78, of Margaretville and recently Robinson Terrace in Stamford, passed away Saturday, Jan. 31. 2009 at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.
He was born April 2, 1930 in Denver, NY, the son of Harris and Ruia (Avery) Ballard.


William Brew

William M. Brew, 41, of Roxbury, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2009 at Fox Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Dec. 16, 1967 in Yonkers, the son of William Michael and Miriam (Sadak) Brew.
Bill had lived in Roxbury for the past eight years.


Bertha Engel

Bertha “Birdie” Engel, 78, of Arkville, passed away at her residence on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009.
She was born July 3, 1930, in Manhattan, the daughter of Charles and Dorothy (Jiracek) Veselsky.
She married Frank Engel in Queens and celebrated 30 years of marriage.
Bertha was the owner-operator of a family operated candy store in Queens and moved to this area in March of 1996.


Clara Finch

Clara Maud Finch, 95, of Hog Mountain Road, Fleischmanns, died Wednesday, Jan. 28. 2009 at the A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born May 27, 1913 in Binghamton, the daughter of the late Herbert and Nancy St. John Schmidt.
Maud had been an area resident for over 65 years.


Dorothy Gasperini

Dorothy Gasperini, 87, of Herdman Road, Shandaken, died peacefully at home on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 with her family at her side.
She was born April 29, 1921 in Shandaken at the family homestead, the daughter of the late Amasa and Rose B. Hughes Herdman.
