Michael E. Hoeko, 91, of Fleischmanns, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Margaretville Memorial Hospital. Margaretville. He was born September 29, 1917 in New York City to Nickolas and Katherine Hoeko. He married Ann Owens on June 4, 1950, in Phoenicia.
The close-knit Catskill towns of Roxbury, Margaretville and Andes are deeply saddened by the loss of a beloved woman long recognized as a pillar of the community, “Mim” Purcell. She died Monday, March 9, 2009 at Margaretville.
Aldea Hermina Purcell was born in North Adams, Massachusetts on January 19, 1914, the daughter of Hector Heroux and Mary Jane Lanoue.
John E. Haney, 78, of Grand Gorge died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009.
He was born in Yuma, Az., and lived a life of travel, adventure and romance.
John first traveled, thanks to the Marine Corps, to Korea and Japan living two years in Hong Kong. John was a decorated Korean War Veteran having earned a purple heart.
Margaret “Peggy” Nydia Yost Pickhardt, 89, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville. She was born in Kensington, Philadelphia September 1, 1919, the only child of Sheridan W. and Catherine Coffee Yost.
Leah Kirstein, 87, passed away at Mountainside on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009.
She was born in Brooklyn, the daughter of a tailor. Leah pursued fashion design as a young woman and worked in New York’s garment district.
Ellen Ash Scheer, 90, of Roxbury, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, just two days before her 91st birthday. She was born in Cordell, Okla., the daughter of A.R. Ash, a lawyer and Gertrude Harlow Ash, a teacher of piano.
