Shandaken supervisor candidate warns foes against family attacks

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone in the Town of Shandaken that the political atmosphere is hostile. Long known as the wild west of the Catskills, this community has a history of tumultuous election campaigns and volatile government sessions.


Syracuse University graduate added to area law firm's staff

Stamford — Michael A. Jacobs of the law firm of Jacobs & Jacobs, Esqs. has announced the addition of attorney Andrew Stammel to the firm’s legal staff.
Attorney Stammel is a 2008 graduate of Syracuse University, where he graduated with honors and received the Dean’s Scholarship, Joseph Brecher Scholarship, and the Family Law and Social Policy Certificate.

Fleischmanns Comprehensive Plan is focus of Oct. 22 meeting

Fleischmanns — The Village of Fleischmanns Comprehensive Plan Committee is seeking public input on Fleischmanns’ draft Comprehensive Plan. The public hearing on Oct. 22 will include a brief presentation on what a Comprehensive Plan is and highlight some of the key recommendations contained within the draft Comprehensive Plan.


Halloween fun at Frost Valley

Claryville — Halloween Theme Weekends will be held at Frost Valley YMCA in Claryville on three weekends - Friday-Sunday, Oct. 16-18, Oct. 23-25 and Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
In addition, A Community Halloween Evening will be held on Friday, Oct. 30 at Frost Valley, starting at 7 p.m.


Last Tanglefoot concert Oct. 24 at RAG

Roxbury — Tanglefoot, the tumultuous band from Canada, a perennial favorite at The Roxbury Arts Group will play its last U.S. concert at RAG on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, $12 for seniors. Reservations are essential, call 607 326-7908.


10th annual GAC Oktoberfest Saturday at Belleayre Mountain

The German-American Club of the Northern Catskills will hold its 10th Annual Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Belleayre Mountain Ski Center’s Discovery Lodge.
Music by the Schwarzenegger Connection and Bavarian folk dancers will set the tone at the event, which will feature vendors selling a variety of German crafts, including wood carvings, amber jewelry, beer steins, and clothing. German refreshments, including imported German beer, homemade cakes, German specialty cakes, bratwurst, soups, and other German classics will also be available.


Shandaken farm stand controversy grows over proposed zoning change

It appears the ongoing farm-stand flap in Shandaken is at a stalemate. A proposed farm-stand law remains in limbo, and in the meantime the man that stands to be most affected by the law made a last ditch effort recently to get the town board to scrap it altogether and start fresh.
Al Higley, the operator of the Hanover Farms produce stand on Route 28 in Mount Tremper, made an appeal to the board at the town council’s October meeting, saying that it would be a bad idea for the board to pass the law as proposed.
