Andes students host Manhattan pen pals

It was the classic tale of City Mouse/Country Mouse last week at Andes Central School. Andes played host to guests from New York City, students attending the School of Law and Social Justice located in Washington Heights. The visit was sponsored by the Catskill Center as part of their “Green Connection,” a collaborative grant program funded by Catskill Watershed Corporation bringing together students from urban and rural settings in an effort to develop a deeper understanding of the Watershed and the importance of man’s greatest resource.


Pilgrim Holiness Church marks two anniversaries

Historic church was built in 1908 and reconstructed in Grand Gorge 50 years ago

The Pilgrim Holiness Church in Grand Gorge commemorated the 50th anniversary of the reconstruction of its sanctuary building on Saturday with a day of celebratory activities, including a 10 a.m. service followed by lunch at the Grand Gorge Civic Center. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the original construction of the building in June 1908, which first served an Advent Christian congregation.


ACS valedictorian looks forward to fall at Princeton University

Andes Central School, graduating nine students this year, has proven yet again that good things can come out of small packages.
Cheyenne Tait, the valedictorian for the class of 2008, has managed to draw a connecting line between a rural Catskill school district and the elite heights of education.

As the calendar changes to April most folks in Delaware County have long since lost their enthusiasm for snow. People are itching for a couple of warm days and the chance to peel away the last layers of “cabin fever” and get started on some outside activities.


Early kitchen wizards on display

At Middletown hall through end of May

Back in the days before electric appliances did most of the work of slicing, chopping and dicing, the well-equipped kitchen contained a variety of hand-forged‚ÄÇchoppers, or chopping knives. Fran Faulkner of New Kingston has placed some of these unusual implements on display at the Middletown Town Hall on Route 28 between Margaretville and Arkville.

MCS Peer Mediation group takes on "bullies"

Margaretville Central School elementary school students are taking steps to end “bullying” incidents.
A group of students in the Peer Mediation group has addressed bullying incidents in the third, fifth and sixth grades with the help of a prepared video.


Dance, Dance Revolution sweeping Margaretville, bringing new moves to physical education classes

The physical education department at Margaretville Central School has deviated from the beaten track in terms of its curriculum. The newest craze that has taken MCS students by storm and taken technology in physical education to the next level is: a video game.


Watercolor, fishing gear among HSM prizes

An original watercolor of a local scene by Halcottsville artist Alix Travis, and an antique fly rod and creel are raffle items being offered by the Historical Society of the Town of Middletown this year. The prizes were displayed for the first time March 15 at “Fins and Flies: A History of Fishing in the Catskills,” an illustrated talk by angling experts Ed and Judy Van Put held at Fairview Public Library.
