Prepare for a night of music that is as visually stimulating as it is melodic, funky, rocking and guaranteed to keep you grooving in the aisles. On Saturday, July 26 at 8 p.m. The Electric Junkyard Gamelan comes to The Roxbury Arts Group.
The group plays original groove driven music played on self-invented instruments fashioned from coat hangers and rubber bands, bed frames, old farm equipment, turntable platters, clay pots, saw blades and truck springs. Its four musicians play haunting modal melodies that float over funky bass lines and layers of danceable interlocking rhythms.

John Gorka, one of America’s pre-eminent singer/songwriters, will appear at The Roxbury Arts Group on Thursday, July 24 at 8 p.m. Gorka began his career when he was a student at Moravian College in eastern Pennsylvania in the ’70s at Godfrey Daniels, a venerable music club. There he encountered folk troubadours like Stan Rogers, Eric Anderson and Tom Paxton.

The Margaretville Magic kicked off their inaugural season in The Mine Kill Division of the Sears/Latte Lounge Men’s Adult Soccer League on July 10 with a 14-7 win against Roxbury. After a decade of play in the Oneonta Division of the league, including four straight championship match appearances, the 2007 Oneonta League Champs relished a change of scenery in 2008.

Roxbury Girl Scout Service Unit 658 celebrated their end-of-the-scouting year with a bridging ceremony on June 13 at the Grand Gorge Civic Center.  Roxbury Central School has five active troops, all of which participated in some way.

Former residents Don and Pauline Hadden, now of Stamford, celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on June 23 at Robinson Terrace. The couple renewed their wedding vows with their pastor, Rev. Richard Dykstra of the Gould Memorial Reformed Church in Roxbury, officiating. About 40 family, friends and residents attended the ceremony and celebration which followed.

Don’t have lunch on Saturday, July 12. Come to The Roxbury Arts Group at noon and participate in a French Dessert Cooking class with Flora Hogman. You will learn how to make crepes, and to flip them in the pan. You will also make cherry clafouti and flambéed bananas. Then you get to eat everything up.

The Roxbury Central School District will hold an Asbestos Awareness Presentation on Wednesday, July 9 at 6 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. Roxbury residents approved the Excel Project that will be performed this summer. The project includes the removal of asbestos-containing floor tile and a short span of pipe insulation in the building’s basement.

Writers in the Mountains (WIM) will hold a reading of work from recent classes in The Hilt Kelly Hall of The Roxbury Arts Group on Sunday, July 6 from 2-4 p.m. There will be short readings and an abundance of food and drinks. Admission is $10. A bound volume of the works included in the program will be available for sale as well.
