Margaretville Auxiliary holiday fair is Nov. 14

Margaretville — The Auxiliary of Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center will hold its annual Holiday Fair on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Mountainside.


Harvest Brunch Buffet and Auction set for Sunday at Open Eye

Margaretville — The Open Eye Theater’s annual Harvest Brunch Buffet and Auction takes center stage on Sunday, Nov. 8 from 12 to 3 p.m. at The Open Eye Theater, 960 Main Street, Margaretville. What’s become a local tradition — the homemade brunch — includes irresistible custom-made pancakes with fresh butter and pure maple syrup, along with breakfast meats, baked salmon, fresh fruit, salads, breads, a variety of luscious pies and many other locally baked sweets.


MCS boys' team advances with sectional win over H-T

After a week of practices, the Margaretville boys were ready and raring to go when they faced the visiting Wildcats of Hunter-Tannersville in the second round of the Section IV Class D Tournament at MCS on Saturday. The Blue Devils, who were playing their first sectional game after receiving a first-round BYE, posted a convincing 5-1 win over Hunter to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament.


"Blithe Spirit" on stage at MCS this weekend

Margaretville — The Margaretville Central School Scitamard Society will present Noel Coward’s 1941 comedy “Blithe Spirit” this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. in the old gym. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students grades 5-12 and senior citizens. Children may attend the performance free.

The Daily Star announced its Delaware League Soccer Girls' and Boys' All-Stars at the league crossover games in Oneonta on Sunday. The 2009 All-Star selections are as follows.


Handful of key town posts up for election next Tuesday

Area voters head to the polls next Tuesday, Nov. 3 to cast their ballots in a number of local races.
Contested races in the News’ coverage area include two seats on the Andes Town Council, the position of Bovina Superintendent of Highways, two seats on the Middletown Town Council, and the position of the Roxbury Tax Collector.
Profiles of each of the candidates on the ballot to fill these positions follow.


Blue Devils top Rams for Delaware title

Once again, it was the third time that did it for the Margaretville Blue Devils, who defeated the rival South Kortright Rams 2-1 to claim the Delaware League title at the National Soccer Hall of Fame complex in Oneonta. The crossover game was played Sunday when heavy rain washed out the contest originally scheduled for Saturday.


Former Margaretville resident indicted in N.J. kidnapping case

A former Margaretville man was indicted last week by a state grand jury in Monmouth County, N.J., on charges stemming from his attempting kidnapping of a man he believed was the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend. Thomas A. Filupeit, 53, was charged in the four-count indictment that included attempted kidnapping, attempted burglary, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.


Sectional seedings released; Margaretville boys get first-round BYE

The Margaretville boys received a first-round BYE in the 2009 Section IV Class D tournament, the bracket for which was released Tuesday. The Blue Devils will enter the tournament in the second round, where they will face the winner of the match-up between Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton and Hunter-Tannersville. The second-round game will be played at MCS on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 3:30 p.m.
