Fleischmanns' Mexican Community is focus of new documentary film

Over two decades ago, Hamden resident Jessica Vecchione left the city life and the advertising rat race behind in favor of organic farming in Orange County. At the time, she could never have known how that decision would impact her life.
Now, more than 20 years later, she is putting the finishing touches on “Bienvenidos a Fleischmanns: An Immigrant Community in Rural America,” a documentary film about the Hispanic immigrant population in Fleischmanns that will be screened at La Cabaña this weekend.


Quick firefighter response saves Hasay Realty office

Quick response by firefighters is credited with saving a Fleischmanns real estate office from serious fire damage Sunday night.
The fire at Hasay Realty on Depot Street was spotted by a neighbor about 9 p.m. Fleischmanns Fire Chief Todd Wickham said that when volunteers arrived, flames were visible in the basement.


Stanford wins 4th Emmy

Scott Stanford, son of Fleischmanns resident Arlene Stanford, won his fourth Emmy Award on Sunday, March 29 for Excellency in New York Sports Broadcasting. Stanford joined the WWOR My9 News Team in 2003 and now anchors the weekend sportscasts including a Sunday sports wrap up. He covers the sports beat as a reporter during the week.


Morell wins easily in Fleischmanns mayoral race

Dave Morell defeated incumbent Malcolm Becker last Wednesday in the race for mayor in the Village of Fleishmanns. Morell received 70 votes. Becker, who was a write-in candidate, got 13 votes. Morell said this week that even though he would not be officially sworn in until April 6 there’s no time like the present.

It was a convincing victory for Fleischmanns mayoral candidate David Morell, who defeated incumbent Malcolm Becker by a vote tally of 70 to 13 in Wednesday's election. Morell has served as a member of the village's planning board for the past year.


Village races on ballot Wednesday; check back tonight for vote tallies

Voters head to the polls today in Fleischmanns and Margaretville to cast their ballots for mayor and trustee positions.
On the ballot in the Margaretville mayoral election are Deputy Mayor John VanBenschoten and Central Catskills Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Carol O’Beirne. Current trustee Iris Mead and Margaretville resident Wallace Patterson are running for two open seats on the village’s board of trustees.

Dave Morell, the single Fleischmanns resident to declare his candidacy for mayor before the February 13 deadline, is quick to state that he would serve at the pleasure of his constituents and will embrace their views.

Fleischmanns water tower moved to public property

A months-long legal battle between the Village of Fleischmanns and two property owners, which focused on the placement of a proposed water-storage tower, was settled quietly last week when the village agreed to move the tower to another site.
In 2008, the village planned to place a 30-foot, 325,000-gallon water tower on land owned by residents Arnold and Roslyn Bernstein.
