A Halloween decoration is being blamed for a Thursday morning fire that destroyed a Clovesville house and left a family of five homeless. The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. and gutted the two-story home. The family dog is credited with barking to wake up the occupants.

Fleischmanns — Homeowners in this historic village are opening some of its most interesting homes for tours and hosting an entire day of family fun and base ball on Sunday, Oct. 12 during “Fleischmanns First Floors Historic House & Garden Tour.” With the Belleayre Fall Festival located just a few minutes away in Arkville this year, you can easily spend some time at Fleischmanns’ all-day festival of fun without missing a thing.

For the first time in decades, some of Fleischmanns’ most interesting and historic homes will be open to tour in “Fleischmanns First Floors Historic House & Garden Tour,” on Sunday, October 12 during the Columbus Day weekend. The community team of Fleischmanns First has gathered a harvest of family fun for that Sunday, including vintage base ball with the Mountain Athletic Club, a quilt show and pie sale at the Fleischmanns Community Church, a children’s activity tent and hay bale maze and plenty of festive ball park food, including bratwurst, in Fleischmanns’ historic Wagner Avenue Village Park.

James Krueger will give a free one-hour concert/reading entitled “Autumn: A Celebration of the Season in Words and Song” at the Skene Memorial Library on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. Hailed by judges as “an extraordinarily talented writer with a real talent for poetic imagery,” Krueger is a two-time honor award winner in the Great American Songwriting Contest.

Congregation Bnai Israel in Fleischmanns will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. with a program of song, videos, inspirational messages and special refreshments. “Positively Israel” is the title of a presentation by Ronnie Gold, a former national officer of Na’amat, Pioneer Women, who lived in the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem with her husband from 1980 to the mid-90s. Mrs. Gold, a member of the congregation, is a Woodstock artist.

The 34th annual Fleischmanns Tennis Tournament’s rescheduled benefit auction took place on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Garden Room at Belleayre Mountain. At the helm for the ninth year, auctioneer Bob Novak’s wry humor and playful prodding elicited generous bids from a gathering of more than 40 friends and supporters. Following the auction, guests enjoyed a midafternoon buffet and a social hour in the sun on the Bluestone Patio.

The rain-postponed finals matches of the 34th Annual Fleischmanns Tennis Tournament got underway at 10 a.m. Sunday. It was the first time in its three plus-decade history that the tournament could not be concluded as scheduled. The six remaining finalists, out of the original field of 46 registrants, prepared to take their turns at center court, to resolve the men’s doubles match that had been halted in the crucial third set, and to vie for the coveted men’s and women’s singles titles.

Following months of battling a proposed 360,000 gallon, 50-foot-tall water tower next door to her home, a Flieschmanns woman and her husband have filed a lawsuit against the village and the Town of Middletown to stop it. Co-plaintiff Anita Rubin, who lives on Paradise Camp Road, directed press inquiries to her attorney on Tuesday.
The village has been mulling the water tower plan for over two years, working with Delaware Engineering, the firm that built the village’s sewer system.

The 34th annual Fleisch-manns Tennis Tournament, which took place last weekend, could not be concluded on Sunday as scheduled, when an unexpected thunderstorm at noon inundated the courts with more than an inch of water.

The 34th annual Fleisch-manns Tennis Tournament will take place this Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27 at the village courts, which have been newly resurfaced this past week by Copeland Coating.
First round sets are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue through the semi-finals. The four final matches, men’s and women’s singles and men’s and mixed doubles will be concluded on Sunday, followed by the trophy and awards presentation, benefit auction and a buffet luncheon.
