Andes — Writer, humorist, voice actor, and all around oddball, Mitch Rapoport, will be reprising his role of Egbert Einstein (Albert’s curmudgeonly cousin), and performing a coming-of-age story about bigotry taken from his manuscript, “Empty Songs and Vacant Melodies,” and a short cerebral writing entitled, “Bellicose Bravado,” at a gathering of the Andes Roundtable, a group of people who meet weekly in Andes to “stimulate our minds and strengthen our friendships.”

Andes — Friends of Ballantine Park will present a free concert in Ballantine Park, Tremperskill Road, county Route 1, on Saturday July 25 from 2-4 p.m. featuring Blind Mice, three singer-songwriters playing their own acoustic music in three-part harmony.

Andes — Chace-Randall Gallery presents “Accord,” new paintings by Michael Fauerbach and photography by Christine Rodin from July 17-August 16. A reception for the artists will be held Saturday, July 18 from 5-7 p.m.

A new era of administrative stewardship begins at Andes Central School today, when Superintendent Robert Chakar, Ed.D, comes to work for the first time.
He will be replacing John Bernhardt, who officially retired last year but served through the 2008-2009 academic year at a reduced salary while the ACS Board searched for his replacement.

Students at area high schools celebrated this weekend as Andes, Margaretville, Roxbury and Onteora central schools conferred diplomas on the graduating classes of 2009.

Leslie Roselli will serve as the keynote speaker at the 2009 Andes Central School graduation ceremony on Friday, June 26. The celebration will be held at 7 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Seven graduates will receive their diplomas.
ACS seniors Hattie Brown and Melody Grapes, who possess averages less than one percent apart, will serve as co-valedictorians of the Class of 2009.

Andes Central School held its 2008-2009 Athletic Banquet on Wednesday, June 10.

In the course of a routine, one-hour meeting, the Andes Town Board announced substantial infrastructure improvement plans at its monthly meeting last Tuesday evening. The board touched on projects slated for three different facilities; its wastewater treatment plant, swimming pool and highway garage, the latter of which is still to be built. It was also reported that despite a recent threat from the county board of elections, both the town’s polling sites will remain open.

A self-guided tour of Andes Gardens sponsored by the Andes Public Library will take place on Saturday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants can pick up a map that day at the library from 10 a.m. on. The fee is $10 per person, children free.
