The Andes girls posted a 3-2 victory over the host Blue Devils of Margaretville on Saturday in the first round of the Margaretville Tournament.
The Mountaineers’ Mariah Ruff led Andes, tallying two goals in the second half to bring the Mountaineers level and then surpass the Blue Devils. Margaretville held a 2-1 lead with 17 minutes left to play, when Ruff finished off a direct kick from Kaitlin Mackay to tie the game at two goals apiece.

The Andes Library sponsored an informational event, “What You Need To Know About Gas Drilling In the Catskills," Saturday that featured Wes Gillingham, program director for Catskill Mountainkeeper, and Anne Saxon-Hersh, a writer.

Andes — The Presbyterian Church of Andes (Town) will be celebrating their 175th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 27. The celebration will begin with the regular church service at 11 a.m. with the new pastor, Dr. Rev. Steven Swanson, preaching the service. A covered dish dinner will follow the service at noon in the dining hall. Each family is asked to bring a dish to pass.

The Andes and Roxbury boys battled at Roxbury on Monday, with the Mountaineers emerging with a 3-1 win despite a 1-0 Rockets lead with less than 15 minutes left to play.
Roxbury freshman Spencer Hinkley gave the Rockets the lead minutes before halftime, when he picked up a pass from senior David Clark and created a breakaway that he capitalized on. Hinkely currently leads the Rockets in scoring.

A match-up between the Andes and Roxbury girls on Monday night yielded a score perhaps better suited to a different sport than soccer. After two overtime periods the game ended in a 4-4 tie, despite a 3-1 Andes lead with just over 15 minutes left to play in regulation.

When area schoolchildren reported to class after the Labor Day weekend holiday, they were presented with an uncommon opportunity.
Students at Andes and Margaretville central schools had the chance to hear back-to-school remarks by President Obama via C-SPAN when the president addressed the nation’s schoolchildren from a high school in Wakefield, Va., at noon on Tuesday. At Roxbury Central School, the president’s address is being taped for later viewing.

The Presbyterian Church of Andes (town) welcomes their new pastor, the Rev. Dr. Steven R. Swanson, to the pulpit Sunday, Sept. 6.

Andes will host a Townwide Yard Sale on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day throughout the community. Residents of Andes will be digging through an assortment of goods and hosting yard sales throughout the hamlet.

Andes —  “What you need to know about gas drilling in the Catskills,” an issue that generates strong feelings both for and against, will be presented by Wes Gillingham, of Catskill Mountainkeeper, and writer/researcher Anne Saxon-Hersh at the Andes Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.

Andes — The Andes Library will host a free Kids Project Puppet Show on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m.
The Kids Project show is a disability awareness program featuring kid-size puppets. The puppets interact directly with the audience, answering questions, telling stories, relating kid-to-kid.
