Andes — Chace-Randall Gallery presents “Curator’s Choice,” a group exhibition by the gallery’s permanently exhibiting artists opening Friday and hanging until Dec. 31. A reception for the artists will be held Saturday, Nov. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m.

One of the two seats up for grabs on the Middletown Town Council will be decided by the absentee voters. After votes were tallied from Tuesday's election, counts showed incumbent Michael Finberg had won one of the two seats available on the town council; Democratic candidate John Bernhardt and Republican Jacob Rosa were tied for the remaining seat.

In a basketball game, the entire Laurens defensive line would have fouled out. In a hockey game, the Andes team would have played a man up for most of the game. But, in a Section IV soccer game, unless a foul is committed deep in the penalty area, a foul results in only a stopped ball. In a low-scoring sport, defensive walls, goalie play, and good defensive marking can provide daunting obstacles for offensive teams. Laurens rolled the dice by playing a fouling game with Andes’ high-scoring striker Peter Fabrykiewicz in a first-round playoff contest at Legion Field in Delhi on Thursday. The gambit paid dividends as the Leopards edged the Mountaineers in an overtime shootout.

The Andes girls’ soccer team faced a daunting challenge in the first round of the Section IV playoffs. Having reached the Sectionals for the first time in over a decade, the 12th seeded Lady Mountaineers squared off last week Tuesday against fifth-seeded Candor. But, that’s only part of the story.

Andes — Bird-On-A-Cliff Theater Group presents the hysterically funny mystery dinner theater titled “Premier: A Tropical Adventure” at The Andes Hotel on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. You are invited to the opening night celebration of a fantastic new cinematic production.

Local towns have submitted preliminary budgets for the coming year, and public hearings will be held next week in Andes, Middletown and Roxbury to discuss the budgets and hear feedback from members of the public.

The Daily Star announced its Delaware League Soccer Girls' and Boys' All-Stars at the league crossover games in Oneonta on Sunday. The 2009 All-Star selections are as follows.

Area voters head to the polls next Tuesday, Nov. 3 to cast their ballots in a number of local races.
Contested races in the News’ coverage area include two seats on the Andes Town Council, the position of Bovina Superintendent of Highways, two seats on the Middletown Town Council, and the position of the Roxbury Tax Collector.
Profiles of each of the candidates on the ballot to fill these positions follow.

The Margaretville boys received a first-round BYE in the 2009 Section IV Class D tournament, the bracket for which was released Tuesday. The Blue Devils will enter the tournament in the second round, where they will face the winner of the match-up between Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton and Hunter-Tannersville. The second-round game will be played at MCS on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 3:30 p.m.

Three in, two out, and the fate of one was hanging in the balance Monday, as area soccer teams awaited the release of the sectional match-ups.
The Margaretville boys and girls and the Andes boys’ soccer teams all qualified outright for sectional play, while the Andes girls’ squad awaited a decision by the ACS administration as to whether or not they would be allowed to advance to postseason play.
