Top-seeded Davenport ends Andes' run in sectional tournament

It was very nearly a Cinderella story when the 12th-seeded Andes boys trailed top-seeded Davenport by only a point with 12.5 seconds remaining in Thursday’s Section IV Class D semifinal match in Oneonta.
“I was convinced we were going to be in the game,” said Andes Head Coach John Bernhardt.

The victory signaled the first trip to the semifinal for the 12th-seeded Mountaineers since 1989, according to Head Coach John Bernhardt.


Margaretville, Andes girls fall in tournament hoop action

It looked as though they hadn’t seen the court in days – and in fact, they hadn’t. When the Margaretville Blue Devil girls traveled to Stamford Saturday to face the Jefferson JayHawks in the opening round of the Section IV Class D basketball tournament, it was the first time either team had picked up a basketball since meeting in the last game of the regular season on Tuesday – before upwards of three feet of snow was dumped on Delaware County.

Basketball sectionals will pit familiar rivals

When the basketball season finally ends, the Andes Mountaineers and the Gilboa Wildcats should be pretty familiar with each other. The two teams met last night at 7 p.m. at Gilboa for the fourth time in the first round of Section IV playoffs. Gilboa (12-5) is seeded fifth, Andes (9-9) is seeded 12th. The Mountaineers upended Gilboa in the title game of the Margaretville Holiday Tournament, but dropped both Delaware League contests, the first an eight-point loss in Gilboa, the second a 52-48 overtime loss at home.


Area teams gear up for hoop sectionals

Several local high school basketball teams took advantage of a new experiment in the Delaware League this season. Each year, Delaware League teams hold one game in their schedule to cover the possibility of qualifying for the Crossover Championship Game. Two teams play in the title game and nine teams end up one game short.
